Maohi Lives Matter : July 17, 2021
On behalf of Youngsolwara Pacific and all of our members across the Pacific fighting for self-determination, nuclear justice and protection of our lands and oceans, we extend solidarity with the Maohi Lives Matter event in Papeete as you commemorate the anniversary of the Centaur nuclear test of 1974.
We remember that during this era of the 1970s, our elder Pacific generations were also fighting in solidarity with you as the fallout of atmospheric tests undertaken, were also contaminating our islands in an act of transboundary harm by the French Government. The dream of a Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific remains strong with our generations, but is incomplete until our brothers and sisters in Maohi Nui are free too.
Over the last 50 years, France has continued to deny the tragedies of nuclear testing in French Occupied Polynesia by propagating the theory of “clean nuclear tests”. We know after 193 tests in Maohi Nui by the French, and with over 315 tests in total being undertaken in the Pacific by the French, British and Americans combined, that nothing can be further from the truth.
Nuclear tests have never been ‘safe’ and radiation doesn’t just magically disappear with time and wilful forgetting.
We call on the French Government to take accountability for their actions and remind them that Maohi Lives Matter. We demand nuclear justice for victim’s assistance, environmental remediation and independence.
We call for New Clear Ways and for a Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific now!
