ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Rim of the Pacific Exercises (RIMPAC) was founded by the US Navy in 1971 as a biennial military exercise. It is intended to facilitate collaboration and partnership across national militaries with the aim of securing free trade across the US "Indo-Pacific" region and the world. RIMPAC also means that more than 25,000 personnel come to Hawaiʻi, but conduct exercises throughout the Pacific, to play at war. These exercises devastate island ecosystems, cause whale beachings, leach heavy metals into fisheries and destroy reefs through live fire training, missile launches, sinking ships and amphibious assaults. On land they bomb sacred sites and conservation zones, without doing any cleanup, leaving hundreds of unexploded ordinances.
In 2022, June 29 - August 5, RIMPAC is hosting militaries from 26 countries including the US, Australia , the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, France, India, Chile, Ecuador, Indonesia, Denmark, Tonga, Israel, Colombia, Japan, Brunei, Malaysia, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Peru, the Republic of the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand.t The multinational maritime exercise will involve participation of nearly 38 surface ships, four submarines, over 170 aircraft and nine national land forces. The large majority of these countries have long and ongoing histories of repression and violence towards its Indigenous peoples. RIMPAC promotes unchecked militarism, increased sex trafficking and gendered violence against local populations. The military is the largest global polluter driving climate change and countries such as the US, Australia and France still refuse to ban the use of nuclear weapons.
Join the movement of artists across the Pacific who are demanding an end to endless wars and an end to the current military build up of the so-called "Indo-Pacific," that does not honor or respect the Pacific peoples. Let us imagine a world that is filled with genuine security, that protects our oceans, our islands and our peoples. That promotes peace, safe housing, clean water and economies rooted in generative industries.
